Which bit if the horse chews excessively?

Choose the right denture

To reduce excessive chewing, you should choose a bit that has no additional chewing-promoting properties and is as close to the horse's mouth as possiblecalm. You should take the following points into consideration:

1. Stainless steel or plastic bits

Stainless steel or special plastic bits tend to beless more conducive to buying than bits made from our SENSOGAN. Stainless steel or plastic bits are tasteless.

Recommendation: NATHE bits made of thermoplastic

TheNATHE bits from SPRENGER are an excellent choice when it comes to preventing excessive chewingminimize. These bits are made of mouth-friendly thermoplastic. In contrast to rubber bits, the smooth surface of the material does not lead to the familiar Eraser effect. Alsosensitive Horses accept the NATHE bits well. As poor conductor of heat, thermoplastic is also pleasant for your horse in Winter as the bit does not get as cold in the tack room as a conventional stainless steel bit. You can read more about our NATHE bits in the article 'NATHE bits for sensitive horses'.

Alternative: SPRENGER TURNADO stainless steel bits

Also bits made ofStainless steel do not have any purchase-promoting properties. However, if you still want to offer your horse the Comfortof a bit that is tailored to the anatomy of the horse's mouth, the SPRENGER TURNADO bits just right. The innovative The joint of these single jointed bits is at 45° tilted forward to equalize the contact surface of the two bit shanks. This is the decisive difference between the TURNADO bits and conventional single jointed models. This special feature is characterized by the Sandblasting in the middle. The even contact surface helps to counteract the natural Crooked of the horse.

Bye-ByeNutcracker effect! You have probably heard of the nutcracker effect in connection with simply broken bits, which describes the Set up of the joint, which then presses into the horse's palate, at the same time Pressure is exerted on the mandibular lugs by the bit legs. This effect is avoided by the Rotation of the joint in our TURNADO bits!

Would you like to find out more about the TURNADO bits from SPRENGER? Then read the article: 'No more nutcracker effect | TURNADO bits'.

2. Correct buckling of the bit

If you have found the right bit in the right size, it is also important to buckle it correctlyPosition to buckle it in the mouth. A bit that is buckled too high can Pressure exert pressure on the corners of the mouth and cause the horse to chew more, while a bit that hangs too low restless lies in the mouth and can also encourage play with the bit. The bit should calm lie in the mouth, and the headpiece should light over the ears (if this is not possible, the bit is buckled in too high) and the cheekpieces must not flare when the reins are picked up (otherwise the bit sits too low).

As a rule of thumb, it is often said that two folds form at the corner of the mouth when the bit is correctly positioned. To check whether this is the case, it is worth taking a look in the horse's mouth: is there enough Space to the molars?!

The right bit size

Not sure what the right bit size is for your horse?

In the article 'How to find the right bit' we explain what you need to look out for.

Bear in mind that the sizes of water snaffles and bits with fixed side pieces are selected differently.

For water snaffles, the loose ring should slide through the holes in the mouthpiece. 3 - 5 mm space between Bit ring and Mouth angle so as not to pinch the sensitive muzzle flesh.

For olive head bits or shank snaffles, usually choose a numbernarrower, because the side parts should end at the corner of the mouth and thus have a lateral effect when riding turnslimiting

NATHE Olive Head Bite:

TheNATHE olive head bit by Sprenger is an excellent choice when it comes to a stable and quiet position in the mouth.

The side pieces keep the bit firmly in place, and the smoothsurface of the thermoplastic feels pleasant to the horse.

This bit is particularly suitable forsensitive Horses that are sensitive to movements in the mouth and therefore chew too much.

TURNADO thigh bridle:

TheTURNADO Schenkelrense offers a very clear lateral Boundary and has a supportive effect, especially on horses that tend to break out over the Shoulder.

The innovativeRotation of the joint ensures an even contact surface and therefore Action on the tongue.

The fixed side pieces also ensure that the bit is held firmly in the horse's mouth.

Further tips for reducing chewing

In addition to choosing the right dentures, there are other measures that can help to reduce excessive chewing:

  • Regular dental care:Regular visits to the Equine dentist are essential. Sharp edges and hooks on the teeth can be unpleasant for your horse, and not just when riding. Most vets recommend at least annual Checks on adult animals.
  • Variety in training:Boredom can also lead to excessive chewing. Offer your four-legged friend a varied Program that encourages both physical as well as mental Dressage work, lunging, cavaletti and cross-country should be incorporated regularly
