Our TURNADO bits are available as classic stainless steel water snaffles or from the popular SENSOGAN. The range also includes shank snaffles and 3-ring bits and, due to high demand, the TURNADO bit is available in SENSOGAN Now also with olive head side pieces. In the following article, we explain exactly what is behind this popular bit.
What is hidden behind the sandblasting in the middle?
Through theInnovative joint, which is tilted forward by 45° the contact surface is the same length on both sides of the tongue. This distinguishes our TURNADO from conventional single jointed bits. In all single jointed models, one bit shank is always shorter than the other, which results in uneven pressure distribution on the tongue. It is therefore advisable to turn these bits regularly to alternate the pressure in the mouth. This is not necessary with the TURNADO bits, as the pressure is distributed evenly on both edges of the tongue due to the inclination of the joint eye. At the same time, the shape helps to counteract the horse's natural crookedness.
Nutcracker effect on the bit
You often hear the term 'nutcracker effect' in connection with single jointed bits. This refers to the fact that single jointed bits straighten up at the joint and press into the palate when the reins are tightened. At the same time, the bit presses hard on the side of the bars. But watch out! With a Fitting bit you can avoid this effect considerably. By tilting the joint forwards by 45°, the bit eyes lie much flatter on the tongue and therefore do not exert any pressure on the tongue and palate. In our bit linesDynamic RS,TURNADO, Pronamic as well as theNATHE Bit, the joint is rotated and avoids pressure on the palate.
TURNADO bits made of stainless steel or SENSOGAN
You can find TURNADO bits made of stainless steel at entry-level prices, while the models made of purchase-promoting SENSOGAN are slightly more expensive, but can have an additional positive effect on acceptance and a loose topline. OurSENSOGAN alloy made of copper, manganese and zinc, in contrast to stainless steel, specifically stimulates the flow of saliva, so the horse starts to chew. The chewing movement loosens the jaw muscles and can therefore have a positive effect on an overall loose topline.
TURNADO bits for young horses?
We generally recommend ourKK ULTRA water snaffle for breaking in young horses, as the straight shape also fits well in mouths with a lot of lip and the double-broken version allows pressure to be distributed evenly across the width of the tongue. However, the TURNADO is ideal for horses that find pressure on the middle of the tongue uncomfortable. The loose rings of the Water snaffle cushions movements of the horse's mouth (and the rider's hand)gently, as the bit can slide in the ring. The 45° inclination of the joint ensures an even contact surface for the single jointed bit. The TURNADO water snaffle from SENSOGAN makes the bit even more 'palatable' for your young horse and promotes acceptance and chewing.
Who are TURNADO bits suitable for?
The TURNADO water snaffles are real all-rounders and are suitable for horses of all ages and training levels. The TURNADO bit is also available as a snaffle bit. And due to high demand, the two olive-headed models are brand new, although the mouthpiece is only available in SENSOGAN. The Olive head bit lies more quietly in the mouth than the Water snaffle. At the same time, the rein aid is transferred more directly to the tongue and lower jaw.
TheTURNADO shank snaffle, and the Fillistrense (which works in a similar way to the Baucher bit) are currently only available as stainless steel bits.
TURNADO shank snaffle
Like any other shank snaffle, the TURNADO shank snaffle provides a lateral limitation and thus supports when riding turns. Especially for horses that tend to break out over the shoulderover the shoulder, a shank snaffle can prove to be a good choice. The fixed side part allows the rein aid to be transferred more directly to the tongue and lower jaw. The 45° inclination of the joint eye, typical of all TURNADO bits, also ensures an even contact surface for both bit shanks.
TURNADO 3-ring bit
Our TURNADO range is rounded off by the 3-ring bit, which is also available with a stainless steel or SENSOGAN mouthpiece. 3 ring bits are suitable in the further course of training for horses that make themselves strong and try to evade the aids upwards. The three rings allow for different ways of attaching the reins, allowing the pressure on the poll to be varied. The 3 ring bit can be used with two pairs of reins or with Pelham strap. Of course, a pair of reins can also be used and buckled into either the large middle ring or the small lower ring. We only recommend this bit for riders with a particularly sensitive hand action.
Buckle the SPRENGER TURNADO bit correctly
Due to the inclination of the joint in the middle, it is important that the bit is buckled in the right way round. There is a small arrow stamped on one side of the mouthpiece, this must point forwards on the left side.Only when the bit is correctly buckled in and the correct size has been selected can it develop its effect correctly. As mentioned above, a regular rotation of the bit is not foreseen and necessary with TURNADO bits.
