Baucher bit - advantages and possible uses
TheBaucher bit, also known as the Fillistrense or B-ring bit is a popular type of bit that has a special effect in the horse's mouth due to its special side pieces and buckling. The Baucher bits are particularly popular in the Iberian and Baroque riding styles and are also increasingly appreciated in the English riding style. In this article, we take a closer look at the characteristicsn, advantages and effect as well as the different variants of this bit.
Smooth position and precise action
The Baucher bit is characterized by itsFixed buckle, which means it lies particularly quietly in the horse's mouth. Unlike a water snaffle with loose rings, it does not sag downwards and hardly moves, even when the horse chews. This means that it cannot be pushed so easily towards the incisors, which is particularly advantageous for horses with a short mouth. Due to the stable side pieces that are fixed to the cheek piece, it also offers a sideways effect, which can prove helpful when turning and thus provides additional support for the horse.
The B-shaped side parts of the Baucher bit or the B-ring bit lie close to the corners of the mouth and provide additional supportlateral support. A good choice for horses that like to break out over the outside shoulder in turns. As with all bits with fixed side pieces, care should be taken when choosing the right bit size to ensure that the side pieces are close to the corner of the mouth in order to be able to develop their lateral limitation. In general, therefore, one size smaller is chosen than for a water snaffle with loose rings. You can find out more about the right bit size in the article 'How to find the right bit'.
No leverage despite a tight fit
Contrary to popular belief, the Baucher bit has no leverage. Although it has a top bar to which the cheekpiece of the snaffle is attached, it lacks a lower bar, which would be necessary to create a leverage effect. In order to be able to exert pressure on the poll, a counter pole, such as a chin chain, would also be required. When the reins are picked up, the pressure is transferred directly through the close position on the tongue without exerting additional pressure on the poll.
Variants of the Baucher bit: broken and bar versions
Baucher bits are available with single and double broken mouthpieces as well as bar bits.
Baucher Gebiss doppelt gebrochen: This variant distributes the pressure on the tongue and bars more evenly and is particularly suitable for horses that react sensitively to punctual pressure. Thanks to the two joints, the bit adapts perfectly to the shape of the mouth.
Baucher bit single broken: : With this version, the pressure is focused more strongly on the bars and the middle of the tongue is relieved. It is ideal for horses that want to avoid pressure on the middle of the tongue.
Baucher bit bar: : The bar bit has a continuous mouthpiece that distributes the pressure evenly over the entire tongue. This variant can provide more calmness for horses that are sensitive to movements in the mouthpiece.
Current trend: Baucher bar bit as a particularly soft bit
There is currently a lot of communication in the social media that the Baucher bit with a bar as a mouthpiece is particularly horse-friendly and soft. This is not generally true. Thecalm position of the Baucher bit is perceived as pleasant by many horses, but at the same time the aids reach the horse's mouth more directly and quickly and require a calm and practiced rider's hand.
That a bar is also considered "soft" bit is not necessarily correct. Bar bits exert an even and constant pressure on the tongue (even when the reins are held back). One-sided aids and the development of position and bending are therefore hardly possible, as the bit would otherwise quickly tilt. This means that bar bits are generally unsuitable for dressage and require the horse to have sufficient leg and weight aids.
The Baucher bit (with single or double jointed mouthpiece or with bar) clearly has its advantages, but should still not be used across the boardEspecially for novice riders or young horses, you should consider whether there are better optionsOptions. Our article 'How to find the right bit' will help you to find the best solution for you and your horse.
When is a Baucher bit suitable?
The Baucher bit is particularly suitable for horses that are sensitive to restless bitsreact or have a short mouth gap. It provides gentle support when turning and is a good choice for horses that tend to break away over the outside shoulder when turning. Especially in Dressage work or the Classical horsemanship, where precise aids are important, this bit can provide valuable services, but also in the Parcour it cuts a fine figure.
Sprenger Baucher Gebisse
