Long or short lower cheeks

In our product range, we generally differentiate between lower cheeks, each seven centimeters long, and short lower cheeks, each measuring five centimeters. While the pressure on the neck and lower jaw is less with short lower cheeks, your rein aid reaches the horse faster and more directly. Longer lower cheeks can create more pressure on the neck, but because of the longer lever, the effect is not as direct and pronounced.

Assistance in the size confusion

To simplify the search for the right size of snaffle and bradoon, it helps to take a closer look at the anatomy of the horse's mouth: The weymouth lies below the bradoon in the horse's mouth. At this point the mouth usually becomes narrower. It is therefore advisable to choose a curb bit that is about half a centimeter to one centimeter smaller than the bridle. In order to achieve the best effect, its sides should be close to the corner of the mouth, but should never pinch it. For the choice of the bit, you can use your everyday snaffle as a guide, provided that your horse is happy with this bit. The bit should be similar in shape and width to the standard snaffle.

Stability when you need it

Tongue freedom

With all the designs and shapes of mullen mouth bits, it's easy to be a bit overwhelmed. The tongue freedom is an important point that you should consider when choosing a bit. Mullen mouth bits with tongue freedom relieve the middle of the tongue and the aids act more on the edges of the tongue. In mullen mouth bits without tongue freedom, the pressure is distributed over the entire tongue. However, since there is no tongue freedom, pressure is already applied to the tongue without rein action. Some horses have a particularly thick and fleshy tongue and benefit from greater tongue freedom.
