Long or short shanks?

In our product range, we generally distinguish between long shanks, each seven centimeters long, and short shanks, each measuring five centimeters. While short shanks put less pressure on the neck and lower jaw, your reins reach the horse faster and more directly. Longer suits can create more pressure on the neck, but because of the longer lever, the effect is not as direct and pronounced.

An educated & experienced hand is necessary here! Because leverage bits allow the rider to apply pressure to the horse's sensitive neck, we recommend these models only for experienced riders. You should have a balanced seat and independent hand, If your horse tends to have a rather low head posture or resists the aids downward, bits with lever action are rather counterproductive. They are more suitable for horses that evade the rider's aids by strongly lifting upwards.

The main purpose of a curb chain is to limit the pressure on the neck. It also counteracts too much downward movement of the horse's head. It should be attached in such a way that an angle of about 30 to 45 degrees is possible between the cleft of your horse's mouth and the undercarriage. flexibility

No matter whether sensitive or strong: mullen mouth bits are suitable for a variety of horses, depending on the design. The selection is huge and depending on the model, the mode of action can vary enormously. But wait a minute: So how do you know if a bar bit might be suitable for you and your horse? Basically, if your horse is difficult to turn or bend, this bit will not offer enough lateral support to communicate effectively & strongly enough. A mullen mouth bit is therefore particularly suitable if you have an even connection with both hands and are able to ride your horse through turns primarily with thigh and weight aids.

Softie or tough guy?

Generally, the softer the mullen mouth, the softer the action. If the mullen mouth bit is soft and flexible, it is recommended for more sensitive horses that may occasionally tense up and become bit shy. If it is rigid and hard, you can use it for strong horses that pull against the bit more often.

Tongue freedom

With all the designs and shapes of mullen mouth bits, it's easy to be a bit overwhelmed. The tongue freedom is an important point that you should consider when choosing a bit. Mullen mouth bits with tongue freedom relieve the middle of the tongue and the aids act more on the edges of the tongue. In mullen mouth bits without tongue freedom, the pressure is distributed over the entire tongue. However, since there is no tongue freedom, pressure is already applied to the tongue without rein action. Some horses have a particularly thick and fleshy tongue and benefit from greater tongue freedom.
